Not recieving yahoo avatar

Earlier today I was chatting with a friend who was using the Yahoo client on his Mac. I was using Adium 1.0.2. He set an avatar for himself and wanted me to tell him what it looked like. Unfortunately, Adium was not showing any image related to his contact list entry.

I then disconnected my Adium connection to Yahoo and launched the Yahoo client. With the official client I was able to see the avatar.

I then quit the yahoo client and reconnected with Adium and still no avatar.

To further confuse me, I have a different contact in the Yahoo protocol for whom I do get an icon. Though this icon is a digital picture.

First question I guess is whether there is difference between a digital picture and an avatar?

Second is Adium able to deal wiht avatars? (I saw a post from last year that indicated it might be a libgaim limitation).

I have a similar problem with MSN contacts. Some of their display pictures never show up in Adium, but they do when I log in using the MSN client.

Adium supports normal Yahoo buddy icons but does not support the "avatar" functionality at this time.

MSN users using the most recent MSN client for WIndows won't have their display pictures shown in Adium at this time because of a protocol incompatibility; hopefully this will be fixed in the coming months during the Google Summer of Code.
