Is there a way to turn off the magnetism at the screen-edge?

Yep. Hold down the shift key while dragging the contact list.

Just curious, why would you want to turn that off?

Well... I like my nicely formed contact list to be 'exactly' six or so pixels from the top and six or so pixels from the left on my second screen... each time I try it, the list will glue itself to the border of the screen.
