For the buddy status, what does the little black speech bubble gem with the white circle inside in mean? i tried looking through help but couldnt find it. Thanks...

so would that mean the user is signing off their mobile device and on with a computer? when it turns from black to green

It likely means that their mobile device is still active, but they have signed on from a computer, so the computer signon takes priority.

if i open ichat, it says 'Mobile Hiptop device' while they are still away..

on adium it went from black to green to red

on ichat it went from green blank to green 'moblile hip top' to red

Purple (Gaim) doesn't report the Hiptop device as a mobile device.

Untrue-ish. The Pidgin team has made a conscious decision to display it as a normal client, and not mobile.
