Secure IM

Post by chem »

As everyone knows by now, AOL has changed there privacy-policy.

This has made me more aware of the fact that my IM conversations are sent plaintext across the internet, and there are cases i'd prefer otherwise.

Trillian has SecureIM, which uses 128-bit blowfish to encrypt the conversation.

I would *love* to see such a feature in AdiumX - and even more so if it'd be compatible with SecureIM (we don't need yet another new standard).

Can this be done?

I'm a developer myself but have little to no experience in cocoa, but would like to contribute anyways.
Any pointers on how to implement this in Adium, or if anyone else is willing to, would be great.

edit: sigh, why did I post this in the bug forum? please move :)

lol, Adium has OTR, or Off-The-Record.

It's more secure than Trillian's SecureIM, and should be in the 0.7x series.

More secure then 128-bit blowfish sounds like bloatware ;)

Anyways, 80% of my contactlist uses something else then Adium - so compatibility with Trillian would make such a feature actually usable.

Haven't found anything called OTR oslt, where do I find it?

Do customize toolbar on a toolbar of a message window, and there should be a lock for encryption.

Really? I didn't think it was going to be implemented until 0.80.

Last time I heard, it was backported.

I could be wrong though…

OTR is only in the .80 branch.

More info about OTR and supported clients: http://www.cypherpunks.ca/otr/
