Spam Guard

Post by kris1351 »

I am new to Adium and have been a Trillian user for a few years now. One of my favorite features of Trillian was my SpamChallenge plugin. Is there anything similar out there for Adium?

hmm, the subject name of this thread is "spam guard", maybe its a feature that blocks incoming spam?

SpamChallenge sounds like something totally different though, like a competition on who can spam the most :P

Thought it was pretty clear myself. The SpamChallenge would force anyone sending you a message to have to give a response statement to prove they were a real person. It really eliminated all the misc. spam you receive on your chats such as MSN.

See? This is what happens when more than one person has the same avatar.

People think you have pornography. :P

It wasn't really clear at all. Yes, it had spam in the name, but you had named the topic of the thread differently than what you were requesting. Also, you didn't describe it at all, you just said you wanted it. I haven't used trillian in 2 years, how am I to know they have something like this? What about others? SpamChallenge sounds like tv show contest.

Hope that clears up why i wanted to know what it was. :D

So is there anything like that in Adium? Or at least a way to block the random spammers from MSN?

I remember I wanted something like this a few months ago...then I stopped getting the spams. It seems they come and go. It would be nice to have though.

If someone IMs you who is not on your buddylist and has not been previously authorized or blocked, the plugin would transparently reply with a challenge, like

"The person you are attempting to contact has a spam block in place. Please reply with the phrase "b6nv3" if you would like to contact them"

or something like that. When they do then their original message would appear on your screen, thus eliminating any automated spam. Of course it would keep track of who has been authorized so no one has to do it more than once.

It should be pretty simple to implement, I'd do it if I knew how :)

That is exactly what Spamchallenge did on Trillian, just made it a little easier. I would be happy if there was a way to blacklist people from sending to you also.

Me neither. I've had spam once on Yahoo. I'm guessing it's mainly AIM, although I've never had any through iChat, either :?

as far as blacklisting, you have the block feature.

For the past 3 days I have been getting an IM every 5-10 minutes from some annoying spammer for some dating site. They are using these randomly generated AIM names as well, so blocking is pointless.

It is extremely annoying to say the least. Some sort of spam engine would be great. And, maybe it can be enabled and disabled as well.

/me Hoping for something in the next 2 min before I get the next spam message!

This would be a relatively easy plugin to implement. Make it a filter plugin, and have a mutable dictionary mapping contact ids to "Allowed" or "Not Allowed". Whenever a "Not Allowed" sends you a message, check if it contains "fxh734q". If it does, set them to allowed, otherwise don't pass it on, and instead send a reply message asking them to send you a message saying "This is an automated spam blocker. Please send a message saying fxh734q to prove that you're not spamming".

Not something I would include in Adium by default though. Good target for an external plugin.
