Hi Forum!
As some of you might know, most German ISPs do a forced disconnect at least every 24 hours. Adium greets me every morning with one error message per chat service ...
So my suggestion is a configurable different behavior on disconnect/reconnect. Personally I don't care that I was disconnected (well I know I was, stupid 24h disconn....). So what I'd like would be something like this:
- retry 5 times (configurable)
- wait 30 secs between retries (configurable)
- after all attempts to reconnect fail, then give a message, otherwise don't
That way the normal disconnects would just be taken as is and ignored, and if there's a real connection problem the user will still see it, but after several failed connects.
Regards
Florian
Suggestion: change behavior on disconnect/reconnect
Suggestion: Automatic reconnect
I would go so far as to suggest we make Adium work "like iChat." That is, no error messages (I don't need to know Adium was disconnected) and persistent attempts to reconnect. If my net connection is down, I'll figure it out -- I don't need Adium to tell me. And once it comes back, Adium should simply reconnect.

Re: Suggestion: Automatic reconnect
While you may be that observant about your internet connection, Average Joe isn't. He may be wondering why the other person isn't responding, or why his file download stopped halfway. A notification from Adium is welcome in that case.zbeckman wrote:I would go so far as to suggest we make Adium work "like iChat." Though you can just turn them off by going to Prefs>Events>Errors.
Necessary? No. Cool? Maybe. Geeky? Heck ya!
Actually, you can't. There is no event tied to these error panels... I've looked. There is a "you disconnect" event, and I've currently got it disabled. But, I still get these error panels.Though you can just turn them off by going to Prefs>Events>Errors.
Again, I think this should work like iChat. If I try to send someone a message while I'm offline, I get an error when I click "send." I don't get a bunch of errors throughout the day every time my network connection fades. Imagine what would happen if every application started doing this? I'd be deluged with half a dozen apps telling me the network was down...He may be wondering why the other person isn't responding, or why his file download stopped halfway.
As for download failures, that's what the download error notification is for. E.g., you can set "file transfer failed" to do something like "bounce the dock icon repeatedly."
My biggest gripe remains that Adium does not seem to try and reconnect. My guess is that this error panel is blocking -- that is, it won't do anything until I dismiss the error panel. iChat is far superior; it quietly reconnects with no interaction required from me.
open ticket?
Is there an open ticket for this suggestion? I don't want to open one myself if it's unnecessary.
While my situation isn't exactly like Florian's, it is similar. I will start out with a network connection at home or at work, Adium is connected and everything is fine. Then I put my MacBook Pro to sleep and travel to the other location, work or home. When I get there, it takes a little time to get connected to WiFi, Adium reports errors about all the services I have and won't try to reconnect.
In the case of my WiFi network at home, it always takes a few seconds for my computer to find the network, but it's long enough for Adium to give up on my IM services. At work, our WiFi lets everybody connect, but it won't route anybody's packets until they've completed web-based authentication.
I'd like to see a "Reconnect All" option in Adium's File menu. Or if I choose "Offline" followed by "Available" (or some other online type of status) from the Adium status menu, it should try to reconnect to all of my services. These options should apply to all of my service accounts for which I have selected "Connect when Adium opens".

It's been a bit of a while since the last time someone posted in this thread, but I'd just like to add my polite request for making it possible to set Adium to reconnect automatically.
After switching from Windows (Trillian), it actually took me quite a while to realize that unlike Trillian, Adium doesn't reconnect automatically when disconnected. Instead it throws the popup error messages, which then need to be dismissed away before manually reconnecting. On Trillian, you can choose whether to reconnect automatically or not, and if yes, then how many times and at what intervals (5s, 30s, 1m, 5m etc.) It's a bit frustrating because I use my IMs as my "voicemail" so if I'm not there and I get dropped from AIM et al., I might only return hours later to discover that I wasn't online
all that time.
Oh, I also have the same problem as the above poster described with getting all those errors upon waking my MBP from sleep even though I know for sure in like 5 seconds, my wireless will be working just fine.
Thanks!

A notification of disconnection is welcome, but perhaps the current method isn't the best choice.smashbrosfan wrote:While you may be that observant about your internet connection, Average Joe isn't. Perhaps something like greying out the chat window and putting a "you have been disconnected; attempting to reconnect" status change message coloured red in the chat window (or something similar) would be better? That way an automatic reconnect could be attempted, reverting the chat window to its usual state (and a status change message showing success) once completed.
