Random Restarts on Macbook

Post by abwaldau »

I bought a Macbook not long ago and was rather displeased when it randomly restarted when closing the lid. Most of the time the laptop would go to sleep, but occasionally it would simply restart. After many long discussions with an Apple engineer, it was determined that Adium was causing the problem. Since then I have not used Adium and the computer has not exhibited the problem. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Could you explain what the Apple engineer said about the problem and how it was related to Adium? I had a MacBook Pro which was doing this intermittently, but it hasn't happened since Apple replaced a faulty logic board and hard drive.
The duck still burns.

We looked up the system log before the crash and this is what it said:

Because the last message is an error associated with Adium, the Apple tech suggested I stop using Adium. At this point the problem practically disappeared and the computer did not restart for for about two full weeks (it had never gone that long before). However, a couple days ago it did restart again which implies that Adium is not the actual problem but that, perhaps, Adium invokes the problem. Does that make sense? In any case, at this point I am practically resigned to the fact that I own a lemon and paid $300 for useless AppleCare on my lemon.

That Adium error is quite common (I see it all the time in my logs) and, as far as I know, doesn't cause a restart. Ever.

That doesn't help solve your problem, unfortunately, but it at least rules out an alleged cause.
