already built-in ;)
Yes that will tell us if we have a new message, not how many we have.
Does anyone need to know how many messages they have?
I'd like to see how many messages I have. That way I can doo something else until I know I'm getting far enough behind in the conversation.

currently you only see three of the people that have said something. their names are quite large, so it never fits on it anyway. especially when i'm logged on to multiple im services i have way more than three messages waiting for me when i come back (5 is minimum), so this would not only be usefull to me, but also nicer to see (because three lines with short names not even fitting in it seems too much for me).

Suggestion: set an event to display a Growl notification when a message is received in a background chat (talking 0.8 beta and beyond here) so you instatly know when you are far enough behind the conversation, be that 1 message or 50 :)

That takes up a fair few more system resources, and adds a lot more screen clutter than a simple badge, though. Especially as we're specifically talking about larger numbers of messages here...

Large number of messages ... then the badge becomes unreadable unless you have 3 icons in the Dock. Then what? It becomes just what it can be right now, a simple Dock icon state that warns of new unread messages.

Umm, I'm not expecting several million - double-digits, maybe, but no more! that would easily fit on an icon, and be more informative than the first few characters of three people's names...

Sorry, don't take that the wrong way. I'm just trying to provide constructive conversation :D

Just to add my two cents worth ;), I happen to like seeing the names of people I am chatting with on the dock icon. I don't need to see every name from every person I am chatting with at the time (though, clearly, from what I am reading, I generally chat with fewer people at a time than many of you do).

Why not just display one badge covering the *total* number of new messages received. After all, Apple's Mail doesn't display individual badges for the total number of e-mail received from *each person*.

I think this would be a really nice, optional feature, for those of us who want to use it.

I must say, I thought this was the idea already. Obviously that's where eevyl and I were having a bit of a misunderstanding :)

I understood from the beginning really, but IMHO the usefulness of such a feature is not worth the effort of implementing it. And anyone who cares to say "it's easy to implement" I say go ahead, code it and submit the patch. Or donate :P

I really think this a worthwile alternative that a lot of people would use. Functionality exactly like iChat and Mail would be bliss.
