Is the DisplaySample code (http://growl.info/files/DisplaySample.zip) working with the 1.1 beta? It compiles OK but doesn't get loaded into the pref pane.

No, the sample display is out of sync with 1.1 and there's a Trac ticket covering this (I don't have the number handy.)

bgannin is probably refering to ticket 674.

I feel like a daredevil and want to take a shot at doing this anyway. Where can I find the API best?

It's not documented yet, so you'll want to read the source code.
