defaults only for message history in 1.1

Post by Bosk »

the fact that the advanced preferences for message history was removed in 1.1 was the first thing i noticed after installing the update.

i have checked trac, and there was a ticket opened on this subject http://trac.adiumx.com/ticket/7385. it seems that one user noticed this during beta, and his opinion was dismissed out of hand. now that we've reached final release (and therefore a wider audience), i'm opening this thread to see if the removal of this feature has more widespread disfavor.

as far as i'm concerned, i now have to turn message history off completely, as it just constantly clutters any new chat window that i open. even the way the new default setting is described in preferences -- Show recent messages in new chats -- can be very misleading. i still expected that there would be some sort of cutoff as to what qualified as "recent", but i've found that the message history feature will dredge up conversations as much as a year old when i open a window for a contact i chat with infrequently.

So your specific problem is that messages which are not 'recent' are displayed? What did you have the preferences set to in previous versions?
The duck still burns.

I'd personally like to avoid readding these preferences. I think that rather than adding back a preference that a few, more advanced, more technically proficient users found useful, that we should try something that Skype does:

Image

Specifically what happens here is that when the previous message history goes back too far, it has a button inline to display more previous chat history inline.

In the instance that the original poster is talking about here, we could just say (pardon my pseudo code):

Code: Select all

if dateOfLastLogFile is greater than or equal to 30 days
then display "Last discussion was on %date%, click here to see it"
else
display 5 lines of message history and button "Show more discussion"
I found this functionality both intuitive and useful in Skype when I first saw it. I think it would resolve the need for having to have a preference for this altogether, it would address the concerns of the original poster within this thread, and it would address our performance concerns we have with first open of a message window.

sorry i took so long to reply to this. in previous versions i had the threshold set at 3 hours. this basically meant that i would only get message history when i was resuming a very recent conversation. this was most frequent when i had to restart Adium or my computer and would lose the context of the conversation without the history feature enabled. it would prevent me from seeing yesterday's conversation with a friend if i picked up a new conversation with them today.

but maybe i was the only user who did this =)
