Pseudo-Coda was the style that was not working.
as a test i changed to "default" in application style, and my default style is set to Brushed.
with Brushed, switching is working as it should.
leaving Adium's application settings to default, and switching back to Psuedo-Coda as the default style in Growl's Display Options, results in application switching being broken again. Adium becomes the active app (as shown in the upper left corner of the macos next to the apple) but no adium windows come forward; the current app's windows stay in the front (although also inactive). update: sometimes the current app stays forward, sometimes adium windows come forward, but never are adium's windows made active.
these themes result in inactive (bad) switching:
Above the Night
Candybars
Crystal
NotifyOS9
NotifyOSX
Plain
these work:
Bezel
Brushed
Bubbles
iCal
Smoke
nano and music video do not switch at all.[/b]
