Some Feature Requests (or maybe ideas?)

Post by PHX »

Hello Everybody:

First of all I would like to say congratulations to the Adium X team, is an excelent software, i love the interface. It has a few bugs, but which software hasn't, right?. Now i'been looking at the software and here are some ideas.

- It would be nice if you could put a script in the Alias Text Box, so i could have a script called for instance, %_itunesname, which shows something like
PHX - Listening to: Artist - Song if i have iTunes running.

- I would like to be able to change at least the position of the notification window (or alert). I would like to put it on the corner instead of in the middle. I find that an alert appearing in the middle of the screen is to distracting, specially if you are concentrated in a task (for instance writing the .8 version of adium).

MM, i think that is all I have for now. Again, thanks for creating this program. :)

First, last I knew, that was already implemented for the protocols that allow it. For MSN accounts, you can use scripts in the Display Name. I'm not sure about ICQ, but I think you can set that in the Alias. AIM doesn't support this kind of stuff, along with other protocols. I might be wrong about this as I've never tried it, but I think I remember reading this.

As for point two, you might want to switch to the Growl notifications. Growl is what Adium 0.8 is using for event notifications and you can set the placement for those in Growl's preferences. Also, in .7, you can switch to the other type of notifications (the one that's rectangular, I think) and you can drag that one around, I believe.

I have Adium .77 and i can't put a script in the Alias for my MSN account. I don't know how to set the display name (i don't understand much the difference either).

I tried using growl, but i like to be able to click on the notification to open the conversation window. The small notification ignores mouse clicks. Growl allows putting a link or something like that in the notification window?. I have programmed a little with growl and i dont think so.

1. You can set your MSN Display Name (what other people see as your name) in the Accounts prefs. Click the MSN account you want to change, and the field is right there. Try putting "/music" in it, for example.

2. Growl notifications aren't moveable, and growl is working on letting apps respond to clicks on their notifications and move their notifications.

If you go into Growl's pref panel, there are position settings in there. I haven't changed it since i like mine centered, but I always figured the radio buttons were for where you wanted the notification to display.

I'm a little confused by the discussion of Growl... though it could be a version difference. I'm using .8b4 r10425 (SVN as of a couple days ago, I think), and Adium uses Growl; my Growl notifications are clickable (to open a new window), and I can set location/style through the Growl prefpane in the System preferences.

(Since I didn't notice at first, note that in the Apps tab in the Growl preferences, you can set different behaviors for different applications/events, if you click on the application.)

Those Who Do Things: Would it make sense to have an 'open the Growl preferences' button in the Adium pref.s somewhere?

in the beta's you arrange growl from within adium, so a link to growl preferences seems less needed, nevertheless i might be something worth looking into.

I just got adium, and there seems to be an enormous amount of customization available. i have been sifting through all the menus and stuff fiddleing with everything and all that. One thing that came to mind was having an "always on top" feature for the buddy list. For those of us who regulary have tons of clutter on our screens it would be nice. Although, maybe there is such a feature and i havent found it yet, but it was just a thought and sugstions can never hurt.

Adium blows AIM away, I wish iIhad found it sooner :-)

With .8 you will have to switch to growl notifications.
But I think I remember an option (pref) in .7 or .6, don't know anymore the name, that you have to DEselect. when a notification appears and you roll over it with the mouse the margin becomes thicker and you can click on it and move it. future notifications will remeber that place and you can re-select the option in the prefs (if you want to)

/Edit: found it: it's called subtle mode.
So just deselect the subtle mode in the advanced->Notification prefs and move the notifications around. then if wanted enable subtle mode again
