Turn off / stop auto add contact when someone IMs me - How?

Post by lunaanil »

Hello all, I have searched this forum and have even done Google searches, but I can't find the answer to this question.

Whenever someone sends me an instant message a little box pops up in Adium saying *this user* wants to be added to your contact list - Deny or Authorize.

I do a lot of advertising and use IM as a means for prospective clients to contact me. It gets to be a real pain to have all those windows pop up interrupting conversations, then I have to click each one individually to get rid of it...and worse when I hit the deny button I have a whole new set of boxes pop up to give a reason for denial. Then I have to go through all those boxes.

I have a lot of potential clients contact me. I do not want to add them to my contact list. Not only would I have an unmanageable number of contacts, but not everyone who contacts me wants to buy my services. No need for them to be on my list.

How do I stop this *auto feature*... I don't want Adium to try to add every single person who contacts me to my Friend's List. I want the option to add people on a case by case basis. Is this even possible?

Thanks!

ICQ I would guess. You sure the message isn't asking for them to add you to their contact list?

This is Yahoo on AdiumX 1.1.4. Running on a G4 Powerbook Mac OS X 10.4.11.

Next time it happens I'll post the message word for word. Thanks!

Oh, I think I get it. Adium auto adds, yahoo has a notice about that on their end and they add you. And then you get a notice.

There is no way around this.

Ahhh...okay thanks. Bummer...I was afraid that's what you were going to say! lol

If anyone knows...maybe it's possible to log into my account via the actual Yahoo messenger app and turn that off somewhere in preferences or something?

If not, I guess I'll just have to deal with it.

Thanks for the replies! :)

It's something adium does as a convenience, which backfires in a few cases such as yours.

Have you tried the yahoo messenger beta? It's pretty good actually.

Are you sure Adium automatically adds contacts? I"m not aware of this happening at any place besides the AIM Recent Buddies feature, which is managed by the AIM server.
The duck still burns.

I was pretty sure it happened for me with 1.1.x on yahoo. I had multiple yahoo accounts try to add someone and they asked me about it.

Ya, it's weird. That was the one time I've had that happen though, so it could be a one off issue.
