I am not sure if it is my problem or what.... after I came back home tonight, I can connect adium to msn again... but only if my mbp is connected to the internet using ethernet.... when I try to do that using the airport, adium simply refused to connect again. There is nothing unusual to the wifi setup and I can connect to the internet with the wifi with no problem... Am I missing something obvious? Please advice.

Temporarily it is working connecting via http proxy. It's obviously related to the Leopard DNS issue but the normal use opendns servers doesn't work for me so this will have to do for now.

Does anyone know if this is a fault in Leopard and if it will be fixed?

Just to report that this is still happening with me (Macbook Pro 15'', Leopard 10.5.2) Connecting 0% > 65% then Error: Reeading Error, then tries reconnecting and that's how it stays. It's just msn. Googletalk and yahoo are fine.

Same problem here for the last two weeks. Can't login to MSN from any Adium in my network, regardless of computer.
BUT, I can login with Microsofts own Messenger on all computers.
And, Adium is working from other connections, I only have this problem at home. Not at the office or when connected to 3G mobile network.

This indicates its a network problem, but if it would be my network we wouldn't be a thread full of people with the same problem.

[10.5.2, using D-link DIR100 router]

Try doing this:

System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS (tab) > Left pane + > Type "4.2.2.2" > OK > Apply

See if that works. :)

the 4.2.2.2 trick worked for me.

Anyone want to explain why it worked?

I don't know why the 4.2.2.2 trick worked.
I had the same problem as you though, and the trick fixed it. :)

If I had to guess at a cause, it's that your dns server doesn't support SRV requests and the server at 4.2.2.2 does.

Here's an excerpt from this article that is poignant:
It’s important to note that this problem does not appear to be a bug in Leopard - it’s caused by old, buggy, or misconfigured DNS servers. The change in Leopard to use the latest IETF recommendations for DNS lookups is simply bringing the DNS server problem to the surface. It’s unclear how many users or applications will be affected by this change, since it only appears with some DNS servers and only for applications using getaddrinfo (most applications still use gethostbyname). For many users these days, their DNS server is actually their home router, which then proxies the request (possibly with a local cache) - so updating router firmware may address the issue.

that worked for me too!! Wonderful! just wonderful!

The explanation makes sense. I have my router as dns-server, but its a new model (D Link DIR-100) and the firmware is up to date. So the responsibility to fix this issue is a firmware update from each router manufacturer.. Why is Apple using a way they know will be a problem? Its very simliar to the Mail charset problem - its using the standard, but no one else has implanted the standard so it works.

However I got another problem now... during this thing didn't work, I added a yahoo contact to my Microsoft Messenger list... This one doesn't show up in Adium, and I can't add it without making an own Yahoo account.. why?
