Growl not working (no logitech)

Post by taijifajin »

Hi everyone. Recently Growl stopped working for me. I installed Leopard and some new apps, and a message popped up about Growl. I wish I remember what it said, but I don't. It gave me two options, that *might* (big emphasis) have been about using old or new settings. Anyway, since then, I can't get any notifications for Adium. I've tried restarting, re-installing, etc etc. Nothing works. I don't have any logitech stuff, so that's not causing a problem either. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance.

Versions:
Growl: 1.1.2
Adium: 1.2.3
OS X: 10.5.2

Did you follow Adium's instructions (I don't have a link handy) for setting up Growl notifications again in that app?

Yeah, I've gone through and it's set up to "Display a Growl notification" but it doesn't. I also tried clicking to make it a "sticky" in the preferences, but that didn't work either.

Edit: So when I try to Uninstall Growl it asks me where GrowlHelperApp.app is, yet it's not anywhere on my computer. However Growl is, and I tried reinstalling Growl over the old one and GrowlHelperApp.app didn't show up. Does that make any sense?

So another piece of information that might help: When I go into the Adium Preferences and take the notification off of "Display a Growl notification" and put it onto something else, like having it speak the message out loud, that will work, so it's not that Adium isn't having trouble making a notification.

I'm having the same issue under Leopard (10.5.2). Growl doesn't seem to be working for any of the applications listed in preferences. I have restarted the service several times but nothing seems to be happening. Problem apps include: Adium, Thunderbird, Skype and Plaxo. I believe I read somewhere that perhaps the Logitech Control Panel application could be the culprit but, uninstalling the Control Panel is not an effective option. Has there been any progress on this issue?

If you are referring to Logitech's problem (you are imprecise in your distinction) the answer is no - Logitech released bad code that is responsible for several apps not functioning correctly (Growl, Textmate come to mind offhand) so they need to address this. Simple workarounds that don't require uninstalling all of the control panel have been discussed ad nauseum already on the forums.

Thank you. I was not aware that the problem existed with Logitech. I will take it up with them. In the interim, I will search this forum for the solutions you mentioned.

Maybe we should try to detect lcc being there and the version that we know is bad, and then provide an alert of some kind to the user?

Maybe check for the Scroll Enhancer and provide to disable it (if this is possible) would be enough? It's not the whole LCC which causes the problem.
