I have been having this problem for a VERY long time now. No matter what choices I make in the preferences for my MSN account, it just will not log in. It gets to at the most 50% where it is sychronizing I think and it just won't finish. It goes back to 0% all over again. I don't know what I should do to get it working.
I am on my home network, the MSN that Microsoft gives out for the Mac works, aMSN works just fine to log in, its just the Adium client that won't connect all the way. Anyone have any hints on what I need to do?
MSN just will NOT connect
Re: MSN just will NOT connect
If you really tried all settings then your only options is to wait until msnp15 is enabled in adium(or the server you get connected to decides to work with msnp9 again). Adium is currently using msnp9 which is really old and the servers are often having problems with old versions while amsn is msnp14 and the official mac msn client is also msnp14 I think.

Try these solutions, one at a time:

Thanks evands. I just tried the second one because I have Leopard and I figured it had to be something to do with it. Sure enough, it worked. I appreciate your help!

Any ETA on when msnp15 will be enabled in Adium?Dimmuxx wrote:If you really tried all settings then your only options is to wait until msnp15 is enabled in adium(or the server you get connected to decides to work with msnp9 again). This afternoon suddenly Adium can't log in to MSN and I haven't changed any settings on my Mac running 10.4.11, and am running Adium 1.2.3 (which I hadn't tweaked, either.) Connects to AOL, ICQ fine.
I tried changing Adium to connect via HTTP etc but no joy. Cannot reach hotmail.com with my web browser but can reach msn.com. From the home page of msn.com I click their "messenger" link (http://im.live.com/messenger/im/home/?source=MSNTDLINK) and the connection times out ("The server at im.live.com is taking too long to respond.").
Wondering if this is a combination of MSN Messenger servers having issues today and/or it Adium's hitting servers that don't like the msnp9?
Re: MSN just will NOT connect
I'm having the same problem... I'd been running with no problems up to the 24th. I'm well up on DNS and confident that the host is resolving... and HTTP tunnelling doesn't work.

Re: MSN just will NOT connect
I'm going crazy trying to get this to work. I've always had troubles with Adium connections on my MacBook but never investigated it enough - always used HTTP and put up with the occasional bounceback.
However, I've just got an iMac and done all the updates, running 10.5.3 and Adium will still not connect to MSN unless I tick HTTP. I've also tried adding the suggested DNS addresses to the connection properties and changing them to OpenDNS... When I do use HTTP, it drops occasionally like my MacBook and messages will sometimes bounce back minutes later.
I'd really love to get it connected using the "normal" method, can anybody suggest something else?! It's been the same using two different routers, Firewall is not turned on in the OS and all outgoing connections are allowed on the router.
After 3 hours of searching...! It appears to be a Netgear router problem, solved by downgrading!
