Growl no longer showing notifications for background chats

Post by nomadius »

Sometime in the last week or two, Adium and Growl stopped playing nice together--while my other apps still talk to Growl just fine, I'm no longer able to see notifications for background messages received, even though I didn't change this configuration myself. I think the problem must have started when I updated Adium a few days ago (auto update!) when this newest version came out.

I tried to search the forums, but unfortunately "growl" is too common of a search term. Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know how I can get my background notifications back? Maybe I can install an earlier version of Adium again until this problem is fixed.

You say 'background notifications'. Does that mean you're getting foreground ones? What are your exact settings in the Preferences->Events pane related to Growl?

I'm sorry for not being more clear. With respect to "Visual Notifications", I am using the default settings. Image

Because I don't routinely use any of the other features that would normally throw up a Growl message (sending files, for example), I'm not sure if this problem is limited to the "Background Chat" part of the problem or if it's an application-wide failure to communicate with Growl.

To directly answer your question, no, I'm not getting foreground notifications because (presumably) I've not set it that way.

I've tried renaming my preferences folder (as suggested in the "BEFORE YOU POST" sticky), but to no avail. Also, I tried to send someone a file (which worked), but no growl notification was displayed then, either. I also tried to roll back to Adium version 1.2.4, but again, this didn't fix the problem.

Have you disabled Adium within Growl's preferences?

I disabled and the subsequently reenabled Adium in the Growl preferences pane. I even tried to uninstall and reinstall Growl, but to no avail.

I wonder what I'm overlooking.

Besides looking at Adium itself, is the notification for message received (Background chat) enabled in the Growl system preferences under Adium's details?

As far as I can tell, it's set correctly. Here's screenshot of the pertinent preference setting:

One thing that I definitely didn't really understand until just recently (i.e., until this problem occurred) is that the Adium comes preloaded with a few different events presets, and at any given time, a user can choose to use one of them. Is this right? Currently, I'm operating under the "Default Notifications" preset (which seemingly includes Growl messages at certain times), but they're still not working.
