Alert sounds have ceased

Post by Verdanice »

Hey there,

A few days back, I noticed that my Adium had stopped producing alert sounds altogether. Growl continues to display visual notifications. I have Adium set to play sounds on messages received and when certain contacts log in (using contact > get info > events), but Adium is completely silent now. I have restarted the system (OS 10.5.3) and Adium several times.

A few days ago I booted my Mac up after a particularly screwed up series of events that forced me to hard shutdown to find that my volume controls were totally disabled, bringing up the sound adjustment pane with an 'x' through the volume level area indicating it can't be changed. If memory serves, I could get sound out of some applications but not others (iTunes was a no-go, not sure about Adium or whether its sounds were functional until this point). This rectified itself through several restarts, I'm not sure what actually fixed it.

So, again, I can get sound out of every other application on my system currently - but Adium is silent and I'm not sure at what time it stopped (within the last week, though, I've done the 10.5.3 update in that period, if that's a possible cause).

Thanks for your time - I have searched around for relevant posts but didn't come across anything, please link me i you know of a similar issue that's been answered to.

Looks like I completely forgot about Trac, I did find a solution there: http://trac.adiumx.com/ticket/8514

Thank you anyways, and hopefully this will serve to help somebody in the future if nothing else. :)

I looked at that link and I still cannot get sounds to work on my brand new iMac I purchased Friday.

I have two user accounts on it, me and my wife. I also have a mbp with just one account on it, and the sounds work fine. I have 10.5.3 installed on both machines. Does having 2 user accounts really deactivate the sound with adium? If so, what's the fix?

Thanks. I made sure the sound settings for both machines were the same so I am totally lost to why it wont work on my iMac.

Have you tried changing the Events(Preferences/Events) to Audio Notifications only or changing the sound-scheme? I noticed that sometimes switching back and forth helps the no sound issue.
