Open the preferences by opening the Adium menu or pressing cmd-,
Click the account tab on top of the preferences window.
Select an account you wish to connect on launch and press the edit button.
On the bottom of the edit window there is a checkbox that allows you to connect on launch.

When you create a new account, you can immediately specify to connect on launch at the same place.

Also, if you would like to edit your post and mention how to turn of autoconnect at startup it would be appreciated. Thanks :)

You also have to have an account on the correct service.
Here's a toast to the brave devs of Adium!
