Send message to entire network?

Hi all, I've programmed my PBX/VoIP/WLAN router to send Growl notifications. However, I would like to send these notifiations not only to specific machines, but to all computers in the local area network.

Is there a way to do this? (Multicast?)

As far as I remember there was a design decision not to allow this - as it was considered 'spammy.'
