Remove icon from menu bar

I tried to show the Growl icon on the menu bar to see what it actually did. I set this option on the General tab of the Growl preferences. But because I didn't use the icon on the menu bar I tried removing it again. So I just unchecked the option in the Preferences. Everything sounds normal you may think.
But from then on the icon keeps reappearing on the menu bar everytime Growl shows it's first alert. I tried to switch it off several times after it appeared but it didn't help, it comes back after every new alert.
How can I remove the icon so it doens't comes back anymore?
I'm using Growl version 1.1.4
