Unwanted notifications, and pref pane

I think I may be beng stupid here, but I can't find any help on this from a search, so sorry if it's a dumb question:

I've just upgraded to the latest version (can't tell you which version - see below!)

I'm sure that before the upgrade I could fine tune the notifications I get, but now I can only find a limited number per app. I want to turn off the "app registered" and "user inactive/user returned" notifications.

Also, when I click on "open growl preferences..." from the growl menu, it brings up a message telling me a newer version of the prefs is already installed, and asking if I want to replace the new version with the old one. Several times I answered no, which loaded system prefs but not the growl ones, but then stupidly (and in an attempt to solve the issue above and get the full set of prefs back), I clicked replace. Now I can't load the prefs at all (which is why I don't know which version is loaded)

Any ideas?
