Welcome screen
This request is sort of documentation, sort of beta, and sorta general, so i put it here. I think adium should have a welcome screen the first time you open it up. A short welcome message as well as easy instructions for setting up your first account. You know like "Get Started" or something. Kind of like what they have the first tim you use iPhoto only more simple. I have had to show some of my friends how to make their first account when I introduced them to Adium. Plus an apps seems friendlier if it says "Welcome to Adium" the first time you use it. I was just thinking text maybe a duck and an OK button. What do you guys think?

I'd love to have a basic welcome screen and probably a 2 to 3 step maximum setup wizard -- an immediate way to create your first account (which would then be signed online) would be the main thing, and maybe one or two other very basic preferences as appropriate. Probably just account setup would be sufficient.
I think we should use the OS X standard welcome wizard type display, which generally puts a box of text and options on the right with an image on the left, partially obscured by the text. Think we should use the default green Adium duck? Or would you want to design something else?

Wengero I think your missing the point. This thing only shows up once, and those kind of buttons are too advanced for a wizard. I guess their could be a step that asks if you want to make another acount after you make the first one or something. I don't know.

Do you want me to do that? You all have seen my icons, I would be glad to make it for you (as big as you need). If you want to use a standard duck, use a color that's not green.Wengero wrote:maybe someone could make a confused duck... or a helpfull duck(have no clue what that could look like)evands wrote:You think we should use the default green Adium duck? Or if you want to use one of psiona's ducks, may I suggest the chemestry duck or the doctor duck. I say the chem duck because you should use the doctor for the help docs.
ALL OF PSIONA'S DUCKS HERE
EDIT: If I got a penny for every time I post the same thing at the same as someone else...

Using one of the many awesome ducks is a good idea... the user has just seen the green duck when launching.
Personally I like the doctor duck for this, as it's more immediately recognizable as someone who is there to help (versus the chemist, who, while I'm sure is quite a helpful guy, one doesn't normally think of as being there to assist you with something)... we can use it in the help, too, eventually, and that way only include one .png for those two purposes
Do we have a bigger version somewhere?
The wizard is an incredibly funny pun/joke, on the other hand... might not be recognizable fading into the text though (only seeing the left half and a bit of the middle).

instead of having a box "do not display this again"
Adium should check if there are preferences and accounts set up.
If there are none, the box should allow to set some. If there are, it doesn't pop up.
Then there should be a cancel button for advanced users who want to set up multiple accounts and don't need the fancy explanation of what Adium is and how it works.

This is a picture of the migration assistant, it's in progress and the tabs are temporary just so i can work.jhonbob3 wrote:I like twopeaks idea and xpander has a good picture. The thing about the picture though is that it's got tabs and i would say to make things less confusing someone makes just a set up that is "one way." That way no one will miss a step and be confused or whatever.

You have the full size adiumy image right? They one you are using is pixelated. And if you you guys want I can make a full size version of the doctor or, as I was talking about yesterday on the IRC channel, a butler adiumy because apple uses those square butler icons for assistants. If you want I can make one of these and you can use it for any assistants you want to use it for.
