How do I invite another person for a group chat?

Post by Sean »

Hi, I was added to a group chat by my friend (we all use MSN). I didn't know that Adium supported that, and I am glad it does! :D

However... after browsing Adium all over and looking for an option to invite someone to the current group convo, it doesn't seem like there is any option to do so? How do I go about doing this?

Or is this something not in the app? If it's not in the app, can it be added in the next version please? It does not seem like a huge thing, so hopefully you guys can add it. Thanks.

IIRC it's on Dave's ToDo List for the next update to chat support. When he finds the free time to work on it is up to his professors though :D

I thought you could right-click (or control-click) a contact on the list to add them to a group chat IIRC. However this only works in a chat you've been invited to.

Indeed, you should be able to invite someone to join a chat which you are already in, whether on MSN or any other service. I'll check it out -- my exam week is almost OVER!!

What I meant was starting your own group chat within Adium. Sorry that i wasn't clear in the first post. I would like to invite a 3rd person to the current convo without already having to be in a group chat to be able to get that option to invite someone.

For example if I am talking to John and I want to invite Suzy to our convo, there is no way that I can do that. And if Suzy was not on Johns buddy list than he can not invite her either etc. I hope you guys understand what I mean, i am not the best at explaining things.

But it is great to here that you can invite someone to a group chat you are already in. I did not know that. Now all that need to be added hopefully is the ability to start one :)

To Create a Group Chat

Post by kalifros »

If i'm reading you properly you are saying that you are in a IM convo with susie, and you want to add john to the conversation. AFAIK you can't simply add them to the current window unless the current window is a chat vs an IM. To get both susie and john in a chat with you choose File -> Join Group Chat... and then fill in an original chat room name (make one up) and put susie and johns screen names into the invite box. Then type a message and let 'er rip :D

File > join group chat doesn't work with MSN i think.

If I remember correctly, this will be possible in 0.8, in a context menu for a MSN contact with the option "Start group chat". I might be wrong though, if any devs would like to confirm or correct that then please do :)

You're right :) It still does create a new window rather than adding someone to the existing window, at least for now.

Yes the Join Group Chat option is grayed out on my Adium, probably because I am using the MSN service and not AIM.

So am I reading wrong, or will I be able to start a group chat in Adium 0.8? If true that is great news, I look forward to it.

yea... sounds like you will be able to. Another less reason for my mate to tell me to use the real MSN client is always a good thing :P

Ok I'll try and clear this up.

On MSN, if you are talking to John and you want to invite Susie to the conversation, you cannot do so, as yes the invite to chat box is greyed out. However if John then invites Bill to the conversation (lets suppose he's using the official client) the chat changes from being an IM with John to an MSN Chat (look at the tabs at the bottom of the window). You can then invite any MSN contact into this chat, and the option will no longer be greyed out. It seems that although Adium can invite people to MSN chats, it cannot start them. Hopefully the people talking about a fix in 0.8 mean that Adium will be able to start group chats in MSN.

It would be useful i think to be able to drag contacts off the contacts list into the join chat window. That way you don't have to type in all their screen names. This can be hard when all you see in you contact list is aliases. Just a thought.

Doesn't the text field auto-complete?

I have never seen it auto-complete. But that would be useful too. I'm throwing out ideas.

Oh sorry, I meant the "New Message…" field…

The "New Message…" field does do that though.

Maybe like in iChat "Join Chatroom…" can create a new chatroom!

Anyone want to try?

The "invite users" textfield does autocomplete now... in SVN!

zaudragon: what are you talking about? Or do you mean specifically for MSN chats?

I mean in iChat, if you "join" a chatroom that doesn't exist, iChat creates a new chatroom

Again, we already do that, unless you're talking about MSN.

i would like to very much ask for the possibilty of adding buddies to an MSN conversation... Im often in group chats/brainstorms and feel like an @ss when I have to ask the other person to invite someone... and its impossible if the other person doesnt have the third/fourth buddy in his own list...

so.. yeah... please give us "Add A Buddy To This Chat" for MSN users :)
