QT is now using 60% of CPU to decode a 'simple' H.264 video

Post by molitors »

I have a series of training videos that I'm going through (from Lynda) and I've opened the videos in a default player (it opened them in QT). I've noticed that CPU spiked because the fans on my laptop started up. When I checked the CPU usage in Activity Monitor, I've noticed that it spiked to 60%! The video had very little motion (it's basically Keynote slides in Mov) so why the spike??? I then tried few other players. I have the latest Perian (1.1.3) installed. Here's a chart:

1) QuickTime 7.5.5 = 60% CPU
2) NicePlayer = 60% (since it uses the decoder that QT uses)
3) Movist = 60% (again, QT decoder) but when you switch it to FFMmpeg by hitting the icon in top right, it drops to 8%.
4) VLC = 7% (now this is more like it)
5) MplayerOSX = 2% (not a mistake, triple checked!)

Oh, and btw, here's the info about the video from QT:

Is this Perian's fault? How do I fix this (other than uninstalling it)?

Thanks!

Edit: I just uninstalled Perian (but didn't restart the system) and it's still using 60% of CPU. Could this be Apple's fault?

Huh, what a weird video format.

I didn't mention this on ars since it would probably be annoying, but the useful stuff to debug this would be:
1. Time Profile (All Thread States) of Everything with mplayer running, then with QT running (i think this might explain CPU % differences)
2. Time Profile of mplayer and then of QT

from Shark.
