Problem with user Avatars (MSN)

Post by sOwL »

Hello. I'm currently using 1.3.3b1 but i've had this problem since 1.2 which i started using adium for first time. The avatars do not refresh, and i don't really know if the avatar im viewing is from yesterday or whatever. Some user avatars don't even show up.... So the thing is that, if i get to see an avatar for some user, it might not be refreshed for ages

wlm7-9. I noticed that the avatars i can't see are wlm9 so i guess m$ changed something (and broke several others) once more? About those who dont use wlm9, i can view their avatars, but i dont know when they refresh. I did a test, i added myself and waited untill i see my avatar. I then changed my avatar, and asked a friend to confirm that its changed. 7 hours later i still see my old avatar.... Kinda the same happens with all my contacts

For the record, there is a big difference between them not seeing your icon and you not seeing theirs.

no, you misunderstood my point: They do see my icon. I also see their icons (exept those who use wlm9) but it takes a long time refreshing.
I'll try to be more clear on what i said on my previous post:
1)I added my own email as a contact in msn
2)After making sure i can see my own avatar (but the one for my email in the contact list), i changed my avatar
My friend DID see my new avatar, right after i changed it. It's been like 7:30 hours since i changed my avatar, and for my email in the contact list, i still see the older one

Is that clear? I'm sorry for my bad english :\

Hi. I seem to be having the same or similar problem. I've tested using two accounts one signed in with Adium (I've used both 1.3.2 and 1.3.3b1) and the other signed in with WLM 9. Neither WLM 9 nor either Adium version can see the Avatar of the other. The OP indicated that users of WLM9 could see his avatar. That has not been the case for me so far. I have left both clients signed in so far for 2 hours and WLM9 has not picked up the Avatar from Adium.

Interestingly if I change my Avatar in Adium, the Avatar placeholder in the conversation window of WLM 9 briefly flashes which would seem to indicate that it is aware that the Avatar has been changed however the Avatar itself is still not displayed.

Opening a conversation window in WLM9 would normally force a refresh of the other accounts avatar but this does not help either.

It appears that something has changed in this latest version of Windows Messenger that is preventing the receipt of Avatars in either direction.

update: wlm9 user's cant see my avatar. I can't see theirs also. It should be a problem on microsoft's side, they must have changed something

my problem though is not that. forget about wlm9 users. Every other can see my avatar normally. I can see their avatars too. They just wont refresh, or will refresh after days. Example, lets say a friend of mine has a blue avatar, and i see this avatar. He then decides to change it to a purple avatar. After many hours im still seeing his blue avatar, it hasn't been updated yet. thats the problem im talking about

The problem that avatars doesn't get updated happen sometimes if you have been connected for a really long time, usually more than a week before it happens for me. Reconnecting fixes the problem though.

Have you ever had Adium set up to access your MSN account through Jabber?

This turned out to be part of the problem for me deleting the relevant Jabber accounts from adium was the solution. It hasn't fixed the WLM 9 problem but at least avatars from other clients seem to update in a more timely fashion now. So far so good anyway.

If you run msn through a xmpp/jabber gateway you are using that server's msn implementation instead of Adium's so that's not an Adium bug.

Yes I agree, however at the time I didn't think I was using a xmpp/jabber gateway. I had done in the past whilst I was playing with getting MSN support in iChat. I'd since disabled the Jabber accounts in Adium but according to the debug log some requests to MSN were still being sent via the xmpp/jabber gateway. After deleting the Jabber accounts all requests to MSN were sent via the MSN protocol.

Nope, not the case either. I don't have any jabber accounts in adium. So you guys confirm that user avatars get instatly updated(or just in a short time)? I wonder what's wrong with me then.....

Yep updates in a matter of seconds; I'm running 1.3.3b1 at the moment and I'm pretty sure it updated in seconds on 1.3.2 as well.

I'm really not sure why i had this problem, but with 1.3.3b2 the problem now is fixed! :) It's the first time that the avatars update just in seconds after a user changed it :)
