So I just updated to the most current version (the one that my Adium program kept pestering me about). I finally connected facebook. Aside from it logging me out all the time, what I find most annoying (and can't seem to resolve) is that I MUST be online in facebook (the little green icon on the bottom right) in order to keep my adium facebook buddy list online.
This is annoying because I ultimately end up with 2 chat windows for the same person: 1 on facebook in safari and one on my desktop in adium.
Is there a way I can fix it so that I could peruse the facebook page "offline" (the little red icon) while still be logged onto the chat through adium?

I don't think you can be "offline" and "online" at the same time, no.
You could just close Facebook in your browser, couldn't you?
