Yesterday I popped open my laptop only to find a frustratingly similar repeat occurrence of the "libpurple-like incidents" that last plagued me when I could not get Adium to work with Yahoo!
The solution I'd been given for previous connection issues with Yahoo! was to change the preference information for each Yahoo! account in Accounts > Options to use the IP Address 66.163.181.106 instead of the DNS scs.msg.yahoo.com ( cannot connect to yahoo messenger with adium ). This worked like a charm.
After much troubleshooting (even suspecting that this might in fact be THE issue) but not knowing for the life of me what the dang default information for Yahoo! was, installing the debugger, grabbing the debug text script etc etc etc... it finally led me here and actually presented me with the ability to look up my old posts and hunt down the information that way.
So figuring others might be in a similar position I'm posting anyways even though I resolved this. And even though others may not have such trouble as I. Of note, installing Yahoo! didn't provide me with info on the default server location. It's obfuscated to their client's user. Bah.
Maybe a simple feature of Adium could be 'restore defaults' as a button for Yahoo! -- I know with many services locally/SF Bay Area -- IP Addresses are insisted upon for things like vent servers or what not, even if you go to the trouble for a fancy subdomain, just because the internet is "that way." The IP Addy is going to be ultimately more stable if it's not changing. Or even just knowing where to look in the forums or on Adium's site to go to Yahoo's for help. I don't know how easy or hard they make it for third party software vendors to work with their services. Well I take that back. I was an original customer once upon a time of Yahoo!'s portal product (that thing built on TIBCO's portal product. Heh. Heheh. Ugh.)
Anyway, enough nonsense rambling. Just in case I am NOT right about what I think has seemed to fix my problem here's my debugging text ANYWAYS. Only changes are Yahoo! account names made account1 and account2 respectively and computer's name changed to [computername]. Router's IP addy changed to something generic even though it's probably generically known anyways.
Oh uhm why is it going to 120.233.255.191, China Mobile Communications Corporations? (120.233.255.191)

Yahoo! IP Addy Change for 66.163.181.106 ?
Re: Yahoo! IP Addy Change for 66.163.181.106 ?
I have no idea what you saying in the remainder of the post, but thanks for reminding me that I set my IP manually. I now changed my Yahoo account settings back to use "scs.msg.yahoo.com" instead of the IP address and it fixed my connection problems.
Apparently Yahoo has moved away from 66.163.181.106, so that's not working anymore. I had forgotten I had set the IP manually following some other connection problem - it's a long time ago that I did that.

thanks to both of you. yahoo! hadn't been connecting for a couple of days now, and this post saved me from opening a ticket.
