Gadu-Gadu via Adium and custom status

Post by dynamitri »

Hello,

Gadu-Gadu in a new version has been released several months ago. One of the major changes that the application has undergone is the custom status length - right now it supports up to 255 characters. Unfortunately, it seems that Gadu-Gadu used via Adium does truncate the custom status after 70 characters - at least that's what I've been told that my Contacts see on Gadu-Gadu while I have a status set up of a greater length (i.e. an iTunes currently playing track exported as a custom status). Seem that the problem lies with Adium and the way the app has been configured. Not sure what can actually be done, but the new Gadu-Gadu application supports custom statuses of a greater length that 70. Is there any chance that Adium will allow longer statuses in the near future?
It would be greatly appreciated. :)

Many thanks for your help and answer,

I doubt someone will make any changes regarding Gadu-Gadu. None of the few developers use it. :/
However, you could file a ticket just in case at http://trac.adium.im.

Thanks for the reply, Robby. I imagine that it's not that popular amongst the developers, being - effectively - a very regional, Polish IM, with very few users amongst non-Polish Internet users. I can tell, however, that a huge majority of Mac users who use the network - still being the most popular, almost sole and exclusive IM in Poland with minute popularity of AIM/MSN/ICQ etc. and virtually no serious competitors on the local market of 40 million people - use Adium for that. Unfortunately, there is no official client for Gadu-Gadu for Mac, the company that does the original app has been ignoring Mac users since the day one and it's very unlikely that anything would change in the forthcoming future. Even in the most recent interviews from 2-3 months ago, when they - surprisingly - have launched Gadu-Gadu for iPhone, they stated "there are no plans of developing an app for Mac OS X in the nearest future".

There is another, alternative app, called "Kadu", but it's very limited in features and does not come anywhere near Adium that has been collectively hailed as "the best app to support the Gadu-Gadu network at the time being", amongst the Mac users. I therefore come to believe that it would be good to maintain at least a very basic sort of support and development for that network, as it appears to be the only window on the world for a quite remarkable group of users.

If you would need any language support (I myself am of Polish origin but am a bilingual person, working as a translator), please do not hesitate to get in touch with me, I would be more than happy to help you with some issues that might undoubtedly arise at some point, due to the original app being in Polish language with no English version that I've heard of.

Thanks,

To be frank, I believe there are quite a few other things that would be nice to have but being volunteers the few developers Adium has tend to work on things they are interested in themselves.
Evan, the most likely developer in my view to work on issues like this, has been too busy with other parts of life to work on Adium.

Looking at http://trac.adium.im/wiki/Translations it indeed seems the Polish localisation of Adium is out of date, so we'd definitely welcome any efforts from you! :) See http://trac.adium.im/wiki/Localization to find out how contribute a translation.

Adium is powered by libpurple. I just came across a libpurple/Pidgin http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/10542 that might be of interest to you.

If your interested in trying a mac app that is gadu compatible, you can try http://www.tlen.pl/index_macos.php but I don't know how feature rich it is. I am currently sticking with Adium for Gadu.

And if your interested in knowing Gadu's ranking on Adium, you can always quack the latest stats here:
http://www.adium.im/sparkle/?forceShow= ... esWeighted
You will probably see why it really isn't on the developers high priority list.
