Disable OTHER CONTACS typing notification?

Post by Bleicke »

Hi,

I found 700 threads on how to prevent my contacts from seeing me type. But I want to disable seeing when they're typing. I don't want to see the little pencil, it annoys me.

How can I disable this?

Thanks,
Bleicke

I have been looking in Adium's preferences but haven't found anything, yet.

Me neither! I looked everywhere 3 times. It's possible to prevent others from seeing when I type.

But how do I switch off when OTHERS are typing?

There is no way to hide typing information from other contacts.

Because that function hasn't been implemented, I'd suppose. This is the first time I see someone request it. ;)

Weird. I find that little pencil really annoying. I always want to switch from a chat and then the pencil comes on and I think: wait, they're gonna say something. And then it takes two minutes.

Well, thanks anyway.

You can get rid of the pencil this by hacking the status icons:

Assuming you're using a built-in status icon set:
- Find Adium.app in Finder
- Control-click > Show Package Contents
- Navigate to Contents/Resources/Status Icons
- Copy whatever set you're using (like "iBubble Status.AdiumStatusIcons") to, say, your Desktop.

With the package (*.AdiumStatusIcons):
- Control-click > Show Package Contents
- Fiddle with the icons as desired. In your case, you probably want to replace files called "typing.png" and "enteredtext.png". Just delete them, then make copies of "available.png" and rename them to replace those.
- My recommendation: Rename the package to "iBubble Status Hacked.AdiumStatusIcons" to distinguish it.
- Drag the package into Adium (or double-click) to install, and select it under "Appearance" in Preferences.

I'm being very detailed, but this all follows a simple idea: Find the status icon set and manipulate the icons so that "typing" looks just like "available."
You might even be able to edit the package within Adium.app successfully, but creating n external derivative icon set is safer, and revertable.

I would also appreciate the "disable all typing notifications" feature. Sometimes people just start typing and never sending messages, and it gets quite disturbing :(

Stop waiting for the messages until they are there then? ;)

Yes, exactly: it's hard to concentrate on the work while getting all this notifications — skype chats, new mail, somebody typing in icq...

I'm trying to disable as much of them as possible. Well, if somebody is typing message for me, I'll know abouit it anyway :)

Don't use IM while working, or have a work-specific IM account?

I don't want to disable the typing notification itself, but I've had cases where friends start typing, and an hour later, they haven't actually sent it yet... Also, I've had cases where adium starts flashing their name, but won't stop even after I've read their messages.

I'd like a way (right click option?) to clear their status back to normal.
