How can i disable the 'Recent Buddies' group?

I have been searching through trac and the forum all night and i see several mentions of it but they're all either misleading or directly conflicting with each other. Trac showed that a feature to disable this was added like 3 years ago, and someone on the Adium team said that the option is under Preferences > Accounts (it's obviously not), another time someone on the Adium team mentioned that this setting is controlled by oscar.c in libpurple (there is no oscar.c in Adium's libpurple source as far as i can see), another time someone on the Adium team said that this setting is hard-coded and can be changed by editing one line of code, but several full-text searches of the source show that this line of code doesn't exist in 1.4hg (or has been substantially changed if it does).

I am willing to edit source and recompile to disable this, i just need to know where to look.

what exactly does this group constitute and why is the group a problem?
