I had this problem with the ICQ-Protocol since Oct. 2009 (downloaded Adium first time).

A simple solution:

The ICQ server "saves" your login status from the real icq client. The only thing you have to do is to login with the real icq client with the Online/available status. When you login in Adium, then you are online :).

The MSN problem is probably related to the current server issues..

If it is a MS server problem, how come it doesn't affect other clients? The Microsoft client and Trillian work fine. This has been reported here since last summer.

The bugs over on the libpurple site seem to indicate that the problem is there and no one has had the time or inclination to fix it. Since libpurple is really a Linux library, I expect that there is not a lot of incentive to fix a problem that is specifically related to Microsoft servers when most Linux users wouldn't be caught dead with a hotmail account.
