MSN Specific Contacts Offline?

So I honestly have no idea how to even explain this, but I will do my best. Let me know if you want me to elaborate on anything.
Since the 1.4 update I haven't been able to talk to my buddies from Gmail... I can't figure out why either. I have a couple of friends that I talk to on Gmail from my MSN and they're both offline right now (yet when I talk to them on facebook they're online and say their gmail's work fine)...
I decided to make a fake hotmail account and add them on adium and they were both online on it.
How could I possibly address this problem? I haven't changed any of my settings on hotmail, and the new account has the same settings as my old one? Why does msn work for the new one for adding them and not my normal one? All of my other contacts for msn will work...
I have no idea how to fix this... I've tried deleting/adding, having them delete/add, restarting adium... nothing seems to be working?
Any solutions or ideas would be awesome!

I filed a bug on this a year ago. The devs here closed it without a solution. The problem lies in libpurple. The bug there has been untouched since.

What is libpurple?!

*Edit* One of my gmail contacts came online and I can talk to him now... still can't talk to the other one though I have no idea how I can possibly fix it either...
