Facebook grouping and numbers

Post by eiriksson »

Hi Adium Buddies,

I noted two things since the latest update that are pretty annoying to me... The first one being about Facebook contacts which used to be grouped under one and only group called "Facebook". Now they're all dispatched in several groups named after the lists I created through my FB profile. To me, this is not practical at all and I wondered if there was a way to have all my FB contacts in just one group?

Secondly, there used to be numbers asides the group names specifying how many contacts within a certain are presently online, they seem to have disappeared with the new version. Not a huge deal, but still it allowed a faster navigation. So once again, is there a way to get this little number back? :)

I thought about re-installing the former version, but before doing so, just wanted to check if you guys knew of anything that could fix those two issues without downgrading.

Thanks in advance!
Cheers!

I believe this is intended behavior. I'm not sure if we have a ticket on it, although I can remember this being discussed before.

Yeah, this really is inconvenient and takes up so much unnecessary space on my desktop.. I thought Adium was all about freeing up space on your desktop and was meant to be a light, practical chat app, which is the reason I love it to begin with. This sucks. Is there any way to just get all my Facebook contacts back into the one "Facebook" group?

I too have been experiencing this issue. Since the update to 1.4 all of my facebook contacts were scrambled into dozens of different groups and in some cases I now I have some contacts appearing 6 times in 6 different groups. If anyone can figure out how to fix this please let me know. Is there anyway to download the previous version? I really do not like this.

It mirrors the groups people are in on the website. Some people prefer this, some people prefer one group. You can turn off groups, in order to reduce clutter.

I really disagree with this. Just because I have Facebook organization of my friends doesn't mean that it's the same organization that I want with my IM client. I'm close to turning off my Facebook chat account because this is so annoying. On Facebook I have my friends that I met through any of my jobs organized into my Work bucket. Under Adium they are organized into each company.

The Facebook tags are relatively random and I don't want to have to maintain them with the same attention that I give my Adium groups. If the tags are used then I should be able to override them locally and now have these overrides vanish the next time I log into Facebook.

For now I'm forced to downgrading Adium until I see this fixed.

Exactly. Thank you. Not everybody might be hating this, but there are people that definitely are, which is why there should be a preference or I should at least be able to put them in a single group. A preference would be better since every time I added a new contact it would just do what I want it to by itself.

I hate that I am downgrading Adium now too..this is really the only thing I hate about the new version and I hate to be sacrificing all the other good stuff just for this.

And for the record...you can't just collapse groups or turn groups off because then your whole buddylist streams down the side of your screen and that's such an early 2000s WASTE OF SPACE that Adium, as a Mac app, is working AGAINST.

Even collapsed I'm looking like this, even with this minimalistic style:
Image

Yeah..that's really..uncluttered. :???:

I've also just noticed that when I run my mouse over that group called "Facebook" (in the picture, check it out) it says that 0 out of 144 are online. First of all...just...what? I have 445 friends..where is that 144 number coming from? I have every one of my contacts organized into lists, so this shouldn't be uncategorized contacts.

This is just bad design. If they're going to support Facebook, since SO many people use it and are going to use it on Adium like I am for chat so I don't have to constantly be logged in on a browser and can implement alerts, etc. for my contacts...this needs to be perfected.

Previously, I had certain facebook contacts come up in a "Regulars" group (for people I chat with regularly) but with the new system, even though I added the "Regulars" group to a Facebook contact, the contact does not appear in that other group. Facebook contacts seem to only be able to appear in the groups as determined by your Facebook friends lists. Anyone have a fix for this?

The problem I have now is that my Facebook lists don't show up at all. The only time a friend shows up is if they IM me. When this happens, the list they're in appears, but with that friend in it only. What...is going on.

This is something that you should request from Facebook, not Adium. With their Jabber server, they have made the horrible decision to not allow clients to modify the grouping of contacts, but instead reset it to your groups on Facebook each time. Adium is not going to add features just to avoid something so stupidly done.

It's nice to know that moving contacts from one group to another is a Facebook problem. I will sure complain about it in their forums. But it's not a Facebook only problem.

I created a group for "Current Freelancers". Did it on adium. Moved some contacts to this group. The group wasn't created as it's told here. But the next time I launched Adium many facebook contacts ended up showing on this list. Some supposed to be there wasn't, and others that I would never put the were.

Other problem is with the message logs. I like to have them and now that it's not a "facebook account" in adium, but a Jabber one instead, the contacts lost their log message log. I know combining contacts cam fix that, but It's not very much a nice idea to have a disabled account just so I can combine contacts.

Is there a way to migrate the message logs to the jabber account?

My problem is just the opposite.
I'm using the same group names on all sites/chat networks.
Now, Adium comes along with a BIG facebook group of >100 contacts, i'd just would like to see them in my "friends", "family" or "gamer" groups that exist on FB and all other networks to have them perfectly grouped together.
Why's there no option toggle, after reading this thread it look like both settings would be possible...?
