My contacts are in groups! HALP!
My contacts are in groups! HALP!
A strange thing has started happening where some of my contacts are in groups. Groups is a great feature that Adium offers, but my problem is that I can't take them *out* of these groups. It's a problem because when I receive an IM from one of my contacts, I can't tell who it is that's talking to me (the group is named after one of my contacts and every contact in that group who IM's me wears the same name). I also can't carry on discrete conversations with different users who are in the same group without inadvertently sending messages to the wrong person within that group.
I try deleting the users (so I can re-add them) but Adium won't delete them. I've tried dragging them out of the groups, but Adium won't have any of that. I've tried deleting the group, but no go.
I absolutely do NOT want to stop using Adium, but this bug will force me to. I'm sure there must be an easy fix... but I can't find it.
Help?

Re: My contacts are in groups! HALP!
im no expert but
only problems ive had is you cant move AIM users to groups or it crashes adium which is fine by me.
Did you check to make sure you didnt accidently group contacts as a single user? just control + click and see if the option for seporating the contacts comes up. Its pretty easy to make it accidently happen since if you accidently drag a user on top of another it will try to combine them.

It's quite likely that I may have accidentally grouped some contacts as a single user. I don't find that hard to believe at all. As you can see from my first post, however, I can't separate them. There's no option to do so, and other stuff (such as "delete" and "unsubscribe") avails me nothing.H!T wrote:iDid you check to make sure you didnt accidently group contacts as a single user? just control + click and see if the option for seporating the contacts comes up. Re: My contacts are in groups! HALP!
It does seem impossible to ungroup some contacts once they have been grouped.
Control-dragging does not work nor are there any settings that allow you to ungroup a contact once grouped.
I accidentally, it seems, grouped some contacts and now I have to be very careful about replying because now the name on my contacts list is not necessarily the user I am IM'ing.
Very frustrating.

Yes, exactly.
I really, really, really, really do not want to ditch Adium, but this problem can't be fixed by any means I can think of (including throwing out all preferences files or having people deleted and re-added).

Nothing, huh?
Rats.
Rats.
Re: My contacts are in groups! HALP!
Ok. I've gotta give up on Adium, love it though I do. I can't tell who I'm IMing anymore until it's too late. I wanna stick with Adium, but I can't. If anyone ever tells me how to fix this, I'll come back.
Cheers!

Re: My contacts are in groups! HALP!
you could try deleting adiums resource files like preferences and see if that works. I dont know where the grouping function is remembered but since its only on adium doing the grouping im sure doing this should fix it.

Where is that file?H!T wrote:you could try deleting adiums resource files like preferences and see if that works. I dont know where the grouping function is remembered but since its only on adium doing the grouping im sure doing this should fix it.
Re: My contacts are in groups! HALP!
i think the preference pane is stored in:
(your user) > library > preferences > and then theres a file for adium that ends in .plist
cache is stored in:
(your user) > library> caches > adium
which holds images of display pics and the directory for the logs but i dont know what the other files are for. I wouldnt bother messing with this im assuming it wont do much of anything.
Dont mess with the application support folders contents since that has your logs in their.
Im not responcible or part of any of the making of the program and i know little of programming but it couldnt hurt o get a flash drive to store all your chat logs if they are important to you because i do not know if removing the preferences may make adium write over the logs.

Re: My contacts are in groups! HALP!
Hey, man. That's better than nothing. Thanks!
Re: My contacts are in groups! HALP!
Okay, literally NONE of that changed anything useful.
I've now gone from relaxed and mellow and zen about this problem to twitchy and agitated and peeved.
Obviously you all have your lives and things to get on with and you don't necessarily wanna stop everything to help a shmuck like me, but any tips you might have would be appreciated.
