Adium for Windows

Post by KinkoBlast »

Please read my message before attempting to kill me.

I'm in a jam. I've looked for a good open source client for the "popular" networks (AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo!) with no succsess. I use jabber among most of my friends, but some people are just too stupid to realise that MSN, or Yahoo!, or OSCAR isn't the only IM system out there. Trillian is somewhat ok, but it lacks too many features in the free mode (like Jabber/XMPP). From what I can tell, the only hard part(and it's a doozey) would be rewriteing the GUI, as most, if not all, of the system calls are supported by Cygwin. If only the origonal dev's would have used X11... oh well.

You may now respond. After that, you may get out the sticks and stones.

[EDIT: Pointing me to a Windows alternitive would be helpful, too]
[Another EDIT: Jabber transports always seem to fail for me]

This has been discussed a lot before, a simple forum search would turn somethind up :)

As far as windows alternatives, Try Miranda. I don't have a link to it, but people say you can make it look exactly like Adium with a few plugins.

Heh.

It's fair to say it would have to be entirely rewritten.[/quote]

Well, gaim and Adium use the same code to connect to the services they connect to, and is, in my experience, the most Adium-like client on the Windows side. That said, it's by no means an exact match :) http://gaim.sf.net

To explain other peoples' answers, Adium cannot be ported to windows because the code that makes Adium Adium is completely not transferrable to the windows world. The programming language of Mac OS X (Cocoa) doesn't exist in the Windows world.

So I hope you do find an alternative, and I hope soon you get a mac and can truly experience Adium :)

Despite popular belief, most people here have no innate hatred for the Windows platform. As long as we don't have to use it, we really don't care about it one way or the other.

Well, if the developers had used X11, they pretty much would have been rewriting gaim, and would have lost a lot of the nifty OS-specific features (the Quartz drawing engine, for one) that make Adium work so well. (Or, to phrase it differently and simplify radically: gaim is basically Adium implemented using X11) (Footnote 1)

That said, I'd try downgrading gaim on your system. The gaim Windows support page describes an error exactly like what you're seeing:
gaim homepage wrote:GTK 2.6.2 + Win98/ME = Wingaim crash - WinGaim builds starting with version 1.1.3 require GTK 2.6.x. There is currently an issue with GTK 2.6.2 that renders it non-functional on Windows 98 and ME. Until this issue is resolved, we recommend that you continue to use Gaim 1.1.2 with GTK 2.4.14 on these systems.
My guess is that a downgrade will get you up and running with gaim in short order. If you absolutely must have the latest and greatest, consider taking the plunge and loading up a Linux distro. (I'm partial to Arch, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first Linux system.) With a lightweight window manager (read: not KDE or Gnome) you should be able to get quite respectable speed out of the system, and run the latest version of gaim without any issues. It's a drastic solution, but it'll work.

No sticks and stones, simply a mild rolled-up newspaper on the subject of forum searches.

I assure you, the results are there if you use the forum search engine and look for "Windows" in "Adium General and Requests:"

http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic. ... ht=windows - long thread
http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic. ... ht=windows - short thread
http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic. ... ht=windows - short thread

(Footnote 1) To be precise, Adium is the protocol layer of gaim (aka libgaim) ported directly to OS X, with the interface layer rewritten in Aqua/Cocoa rather than X11/GTK2. But the sentence read better without that level of pedantry.
You can have root when you pry it from my cold dead fingers.

I have a fried who uses Trilian and really likes it. It has a lot of similar options as Adium does, except the customization of the aesthetics of the contact list and message window.

I wouldn't normally do this, but you are being really negative. I'm locking this thread.
