Unable to see / communicate with some of my contacts

Hi,

I'm using Adium 1.4.1 on Mac 10.6.3. I am signed in with an MSN (@msn.com) account. This has only happened in the last few weeks, but contacts who I authorize are not showing any status when they are added -- http://screencast.com/t/xtT89g91SQ. I have verified with the folks that they are indeed signed in. One guy is using an MSN (@hotmail.com) account but the others are not. How can I troubleshoot this further? I'm also unable to send any IMs to these contacts (get the message, "Message was not sent because the system is unavailable. This normally happens when the user is blocked or does not exist.").
