Initial Message window popping up

Something changed recently and I can't figure out how to fix it. Whenever I get a new IM, my dock icon bounces (cool), badge is added (cool), name shows up on dock icon (cool), the message window automatically opens (not cool). I don't want the window to open automatically. I want to have to click the dock icon. How do I change this? I don't think this was the behavior before.
