1.5b8 hijacks the NVIDIA GPU, kills battery life

Post by summerstormpictures »

Oh, and another issue that is increasingly frustrating with a lot of software out there:

Why is Adium grabbing hold of my discrete/NVIDIA GPU? There's no need for it to do this since there's no video chat capability anyway. All it does now is reduce my battery life from 5-plus hours to just over 2.5 hours. The only way to get it to release the NVIDIA GPU is to quit Adium. That spoils the whole point of having a chat client running constantly.

This is a big-time issue and will be a deal-killer. Please address this immediately or face the wrath of MacBook/Pro owners.

This issue is one of the reasons I had to abandon using either Firefox or Google Chrome and go back to using Safari, which is ''smart enough'' to know when it doesn't need the NVIDIA GPU anymore and sets it free.

There's no Flash and no QuickTime or other things going on with Adium as far as I know, so why is this even happening? Even iTunes doesn't grab the NVIDIA GPU. It stays with the ''good enough'' Intel chipset.

That is not really the way to get help you know.

It is a known bug, but noone has stepped up to fix it. You are welcome to put up a bounty to get someone to fix it quickly.
For Vienna issues: Please search Github before posting! Otherwise, file a bug report on Github.

If you are interested in helping out with the development of Vienna, see the Vienna website for details. All levels of programming experience are welcome!

I am using the Adium Matte style which I downloaded.

I apologize if I am obtuse in my contributions here. I am new to the forum and while I have used Adium for over 5-years now, up to now it has been so flawless that I guess I haven't had to come here. I just wish things were still that way.

You're fine. I interpreted the second sentence David quoted as sarcasm. =-)

I wonder whether it's the message style that is causing this. Could you use a bundled style for a while and check on that?

I switched back to the Stockholm style. So far so good. The onboard/Intel is not switching off to the NVIDIA GPU, so this is good.

Running 1.5 on a 2011 MacBook Pro with the AMD Radeon HD 6770M and seeing that Adium is being reported by gfxCardStatus.

Using SmoothSeparateLines for regular and Mockie group chat styles.

Any thoughts?

SmoothSeparateLines is not a bundled style. Please try a bundled one instead and see how that works.
