Giant Adium Duck/Icon appears in most new chat windows

The duck: shown to scale

It's pretty invasive. (It's actually a giant icon, it just shows up as a duck for people without a personal icon)

Adium version 1.5.2
Mac OSX 10.7.3

I have gone through settings a couple of times and have no idea what triggers this or why.

It only appears in some chats. I perpetually have a tab open with my wife, since I chat with her regularly. There is no duck there.

However, when I start chats with a new person, it seems to always appear. The service doesn't seem to matter (at least with AOL or Yahoo!).

I suspect there's a connection to the fact it doesn't show up on my wife's chat window, but other than length of time, I'm not sure what. I've quit and restarted Adium, bringing back existing chat windows. I've put the computer to sleep. I've disconnected and reconnected my external monitor. These are the only things I do that I would think could alter or effect Adium's display.

As for the common fix in trouble shooting, I don't have any existing Adium preferences. My library application and preference folders are devoid of references to Adium. And a finder search turns up nothing except for the program file.

How do I get rid of the giant duck?

Apropos of nothing (except trouble shooting, like relaunching the app which I haven't done in weeks), the duck appears in my wife's chat window too. It wasn't showing up because the active text was status updates, e.g. "You have connected" which is the only thing that gets rid of the massive icon.

I found the setting, looking through preferences again.

It even helpfully shows you that the icon will cover up IM text and generally be unhelpful. Unfortunately, it shows an icon that I just ignored for a piece of strange UI, instead of the default duck icon that we're more likely to encounter.

This must have gotten added recently, or turned up with the recent update. I hope they disable this being on by default in the future.

It took me a while to reach the message style's author to ask him about this.

This particular variant of the "Smooth Operator" message style, "Compact", has been made to behave like that for Adium 1.4 which was released in October 2010. It is not the default message style variant so you must have chosen it at some point in time.

This is impossible. Adium creates a preference directory the first time you launch it and you would be able to save a setting such as "Show user icons" without it. See http://adium.im/help/pgs/Miscellaneous- ... Files.html for details. For Spotlight to find preferences that are located in the Library folder, you need to make it look for "system files" as well.
