How to disable/modify notifications?

I have Vienna set that on article retrieval, 'do nothing'.
But even 'do nothing' displays a large, non-editable notification on the top right corner of the screen. That's hundreds of times a day, every day.

How can I can kill it off?

I suppose you are on Mountain Lion...

The settings are in Apple's Control Panel -> Notifications
