Vienna 3.0 Locking Up, Takes Down Entire Machine

Post by WildCowboy »

Four times now since I upgraded to the Vienna 3.0 beta, I've experience this major issue:

When browsing through the article list using the arrow keys, all of a sudden Vienna freezes up and the cursor starts beachballing. My system remains usable, with the beachball cursor appearing only when over Vienna. Within seconds, my fans start ramping up and Vienna is clearly hanging.

I head to the Dock to Force Quit Vienna, and when I do so, my entire system freezes up. The cursor still moves, but the system is otherwise unresponsive. Upon force restart, everything is fine for a few days until it happens again.

I'm running a 15" Retina MacBook Pro.

Do you suspect that it is related to a refresh ? Does the animation related to feed refreshes appear in the folder list ?

Is it possible for you to disable automatic refresh for a few days (and use Command-R to provoke manual refreshes) ?

Also, do you use Safari alongside Vienna ?

Try quitting Safari instead of force restarting your machine.

I don't think it's related to a refresh, but I'll double check. Haven't had any issues in the last 24 hours.

I do use Safari alongside Vienna. Once I get to the point of force restarting my machine, that's my only option...the system is completely unresponsive except for moving the cursor around the screen. Are you saying when Vienna begins to hang I should quit Safari?

It just happened to me again. There was no refresh in progress, and I had no browser tabs in Vienna open. I was simply using arrow keys to move through my list of articles.

It appears to be related to the Flash Player plug-in, as Activity Monitor shows "Flash Player (ViennaBeta Internet plug-in)" spiking to roughly 27% on my quad-core system, but still causes fans to spin up. I have the latest Flash Player 11.5 installed on my machine, a 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro.

Attempting to quit ViennaBeta or the Flash plug-in at that point is what causes the entire system to freeze up with the exception of the pointer.

Typically, how much memory is allocated by the OS to these processes on your machine ? (Vienna and Flash Player)

Vienna is currently using 600 MB on my system, which seems fairly typical. I do remember 2.x having memory leaks that saw it gradually drift above 1 GB, but haven't been keeping an eye on 3.0.

Flash Player is using about 50 MB when it gets invoked as I scroll through my article list and hit an item with Flash content enabled.

After sticking with Vienna 2.6 for the past several months, I decided to give 3.0 Beta 11 a shot yesterday, and it's still causing the same problem on my Retina MacBook Pro, now running 10.8.3.

Using down arrow to browse through article list, Vienna suddenly freezes and fans begin blasting. Force quitting Vienna then causes my entire machine to lock up.
