Is it some kind of special graphics thing in Panther and Tiger? Or is it just because the developers thought, "Hey, let's annoy the Jaguar users"?

It's because Jaguar does not support message views made in WebKit.

Because safari 1.0's webkit blows.
Unfortunately .8 will also be the last jag compatible release.

I thought it might be something like that. At least I'll be getting a new computer with Tiger before I go off to college this fall, so this'll be something else to look forward to.

Indeed, Safari 1.0's WebKit is bad. Adam managed to BARELY make it work on Jaguar but it was at a slow crawl. There was a whole +m deal in #adium about this.

Our 10.2 users are on older machines and, honestly, I think they're better off without the old webkit in their message windows.
Webkit on 10.4 is amazing though

So I can untick the webkit plugin for adium running on jag? Would this affect the performance of adium in anyway? (make it faster? slower? broken?)
I still think webkit is too slow on a 400mhz g3.. even if it's running tiger (just..)
