I’m wondering if there’s a way to set a different refresh schedule for a feed. There are a few feeds I need to update frequently, and others less often.
RIght now I can set the refresh rate to 6 hours, which is fine for most of my feeds, and then refresh the important ones manually every hour. But of course I forget to do this. Alternatively I could set the rate to hourly, but then I’m creating a lot of extra notifications for myself and generating unnecessary traffic to our web server (many of the feeds I follow are on our own site).
Thanks!
Per-feed refresh schedules?
Re: Per-feed refresh schedules?
I understand the distraction impact of having extra updates, but the network traffic to your webserver should be pretty minimal from Vienna.
If supported by the webserver, Vienna supports the following features:
- If-Modified-Since HTTP headers
- Gzip compression (we did quite a bit of work on this late last year to ensure compression worked on broad range of HTTP servers, including Google's)
- Caching of content where possible.
So I'd be interested to hear any details of webserver performance impacts if you can share!

Re: Per-feed refresh schedules?
Echelon9, thanks for responding. I no longer think it’s related, but we have a django-based site that’s been maxing out its database connections recently. Someone suggested that RSS readers could be trying to access the feeds at the same time. I had about a half dozen feeds refreshing every hour that I had subscribed to the same week we started having connection errors, so I thought they might be related.
I do still think a per-feed refresh schedule would be a useful feature, or even just the ability to turn off automatic refresh for a feed or a folder of feeds.
