Menubar Icon

Post by thelouisguy »

I would like to know if it is possible to keep the Adium Menubar icon in the menubar even when Adium if off.
I cannot find a .menu file in the Adium package and was wondering if it was possible to create one. I have the developer tools but I cannot seem to open Adium in them.
Would anyone know how I would go about doing this?

If you want to use the developer tools with Adium, you have to build from source. (Not exactly true, but as near as dammit).

Adium can't easily leave its icon in the menubar. It would have to keep a process running.

Thanks. I know what you mean. I've been fooling around in the source for a while now and cannot seem to find what I am looking for, but thanks for the help anyways ;)

no, you can not keep it there when adium is not running, that requires a dirty hack and some unsupported API's we have chosen not to use.

The Adium menu item is not a true Menu Extra, so there is no .menu file. Apple doesn't allow third-party Menu Extras, and third parties that do so are using a haxie. As evands explained somewhere, Adium does not rely on hacks; therefore there is no Menu Extra.

He did suggest that one could be made by someone using Applescript to communicate with Adium (a la Synergy for iTunes, but actually a MenuExtra), but as far as I know, this would require the completion of a more thorough dictionary as far as status is concerned, and it would also not allow for the menu item to work when Adium is closed (with the exception of a "Launch Adium" item).

Okay, thank you. I use Buttler in my menubar and wanted something more permanent for Adium. But I am quite content with having it appear and disappear when I open and close Adium.
