Issues with MSN contact list (moving buddies between groups)

Post by jb »

Heya,

I've just made the leap from Fire to Adium, and I must admit I'm extremely impressed. The interface is to die for. Well done guys!

However, I've managed to run into a rather annoying Contact List bug with MSN that seems to crop up at various points. When I first connected to MSN Adium syncronized the list with the server -- respecting the groups on the server. For the first time I created groups, and ordered my contacts.

However, although most of the buddy moves were fine. A few of them weren't. Now when AdiumX launches I will get the following error:

"Buddy list syncronization issue in <account> (MSN)

<user> on the local list is inside the group "<Group>" but not on the server list. Do you want this buddy to be added?"

(Often the group is Individuals[or some other group] and not the group I moved it to....)

The loaded Adium buddy list sometimes has the buddy in the new position. Pressing Yes on the error dialogue box does not change its position. On reconnect the message reappears. If I move the buddy again, on next reconnect I get the message twice. Pressing No and if the buddy move was successful, the error disappears. Otherwise the buddy disappears for good (and needs to be readded).

It seems that under some conditions AdiumX is not removing the buddy from its old group when it adds it to the new group.

Any ideas on why this might be and the solution? Perhaps adium should check whether the buddy is stored anywhere else on the buddy list before asking? (And if it is, politely ask to relocate locally rather thank give this message?)

Apart from that (and with my buddy list now configured) I'm having no real problems with AdiumX. Just thought I should give feedback on this.

Many thanks,

J

Cool, I have pretty much the same story. Just came from Fire and Adium freaking rocks!

I too was wondering about this. I wasn't even sure that it synced those contacts groups with their respective servers, but alas.

Is it possible to just display the contacts in a "local" organization only? IOO, no "buddies", "Individuals" or "Friends" but a single client-side "Contacts". I like to use the themes that show the network icons and that is enough organization for me.

Make sense?

Welcome to the Forums!

The "flat" contact list (no groups, only contacts) will be available in .8 (and is currently in SVN) [and is also mentioned in the sticky thread IIRC

I just switched from Fire as well. Fire was becoming increasingly unstable. I love Adium but had the same complaint as above. Glad to see you are on it.

I would also love some more voices so you could assign different voices for different contacts. I saw that this is being addressed in future releases...I hope that it's coming soon.

Flat contact list isn't going to solve the original poster's problems. Adium doesn't sync contact list changes correctly, then it pops up an annoying warning on each reconnect. This is a bug, and it's been around far to long.

Which is why I wasn't talking to the original poster :P I was speaking to the 2nd poster, who asked about the flat list. Please read before making baseless assertions to draw attention to what's bugging you.

When I feel like I have something to add about it. I answered the question I felt like answering and that I had an answer to.

That is unacceptable, you must answer every question, even the ones you don't know the answer to.

I'm actually having a slightly different problem, and mine's occuring on AIM. When I try and move contacts, it gives me:
Unable To Add
Could not add the buddy [sn] for an unknown reason. The most common reason for this is that you have the maximum number of allowed buddies in your buddy list.

But, I'm not adding anyone, I'm just moving the person from one group to another. Even after deleting a bunch of contacts it gives me the error. :(
