status icons and is this new behavior

Post by cometbus »

in the tab that I am talking in, when someone messages me, I get a blue balloon icon, I think that is telling me it is "unread", but during that time, they may be typing some more stuff as well, in order to get the "pencil" I have to click on the chat window to let it know I have read the post.

I am pretty sure this is new, any new status change used to over-ride any others, am I missing out on a simple pref change here?

Some new information on status icons:
http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/StatusIcons

We only display one icon at a time, so more "important" icons are given priority over others.

Ok, cool, so the bubble is:
Unviewed Messages - Chat bubble

Priority is this order:
Unviewed Messages, Typing/Entered Text, Mobile, Away, Idle, Online/Offline/Unknown.

So, behavior is expected, can we change the status priority, seems a little off to me. it forces you to mouse around all the time, friend says something, and you think there is more to come, but you just can not tell, so you actually have to stop whatever you are doing, click on Adium, and then you can see, oh, he *is* typing.

I for one say this is backwards, it is counterproductive to idly reading IM's and not dealing with them, but wanting to know what is going on.

I agree that entering text might have a higher priority...

I think new content in the present is far more important than possible future content.

And that is fine, but the typing indicator needs to be seen when someone is typing no matter what the state is. Seriously, the time I spend clicking back to the chat window just to see if my contact is typing or not is annoying.

Say you are browsing the web and a friend is rattling off something, then he posts it, and keeps on typing, you have no idea they are typing, because there is this bubble blocking you from knowing.

All you have to do is recognize the new content, and the typing indicator will return. This is not unreasonable, as it is far more important to know that there is a new message than to know there are more messages to come.

I think what ScottHaneda is asking for is that either the new message icon not appear until the person has stopped typing (and if he restarts typing, you see the typing icon) or that there be an icon indicating a new message but the person is still typing. In both cases, once the person stops typing, all you see is the message recieved icon. Is that right?

If that's right, then I have to agree, something like that would be nice.
