The downloads number is from our administration panel for cachefly on the statistics page... so just Adam and I can see that. I do wish we had a way to estimate active users of all versions... not sure how to go about that though!
That's a bit odd that we're described as just a jabber client... the alexa.com site may have found adiumx.com from jabber.org, perhaps?

how about making each adium secretly connect to a secret server which counts how many people are active at any given time, maybe for 8.2?

I'm sure that would go over well
I know! We can have a unique registration number for each copy of Adium which enables us to track how many different computers a given copy of Adium is being used on, so we find out how much it's being spread by word-of-mouth!

More seriously...
I think that the way used by NVu is pretty good.
When you lunch it for the first time, NVuask you if it can send a ping to their server (there is is a big difference between DL and use an app!), and ask you if you want to donate (when I see the stats, I see how much the server cost... ).

The time that applications start secretly trying to connect to servers is the time that I block that connection with Little Snitch.
