Adium stats

Post by biglittledragoon »

Hello,

I am curious.

So, I searched to know a little bit more about the "Adium world". Like how many people use it or things like that.

So, I searched the stats of adiumx.com, it's impressive!
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traff ... adiumx.com

I have three questions.

Why is Adium described as a "Jabber client for Mac OSX"? :?

Is there a way to know how many times Adium is downloaded? (Evan speaks about 100,000 downloads of Adium X 0.81!!!)

And is there a way to estimate how many people use it? (and LOVE it of course! The contrary is impossible!)

Thanks,

BLD

probably because in anticipation of .8 coming out alota people checked the page, now that its out, people are using .8 .

i bet the trend will come back when the .9 stuff gets going.

The downloads number is from our administration panel for cachefly on the statistics page... so just Adam and I can see that. I do wish we had a way to estimate active users of all versions... not sure how to go about that though!

That's a bit odd that we're described as just a jabber client... the alexa.com site may have found adiumx.com from jabber.org, perhaps?

how about making each adium secretly connect to a secret server which counts how many people are active at any given time, maybe for 8.2?

I know! We can have a unique registration number for each copy of Adium which enables us to track how many different computers a given copy of Adium is being used on, so we find out how much it's being spread by word-of-mouth!

Hooch is crazy. I mean, you guys are crazy.

I have to say those stats are amazing. I guess I should have realized the scale this project has gotten to. WOW!

More seriously...

I think that the way used by NVu is pretty good.
When you lunch it for the first time, NVu ask you if it can send a ping to their server (there is is a big difference between DL and use an app!), and ask you if you want to donate (when I see the stats, I see how much the server cost... ).

The time that applications start secretly trying to connect to servers is the time that I block that connection with Little Snitch. :P
I'm... kinda tired... I think I'll go home now.

It'll give us an excuse to get our firewall navigation code up to snuff.
