Message Window

Post by Tempest »

I don't mean to troll, but I can't understand the reluctance to updating the message window. Its appearance is pretty much the only part of Adium that can not be configured. Furthermore, with the recent discussions here regarding the secondary nature of the contact list it seems that the devs are searching for practical solutions for making the contact list disappear/blend in to whatever extent is possible or practical. Adium is famous for the vast amount of preferences that it offers users, and I can not understand why what has now been acknowledged as the main window of the app, the message window, should be the only part of the application over which users have no control.

what did you want to be more customizable?

I'm sorry that was unclear. I was referring not to the message view, but the tabs and widgets in the window. I noticed that someone had posted this over on trac, but that the devs had moved it to lowest priority without much comment.

Widgets? You mean the buttons at the top? Use “Customize Toolbar…” for that.

Or, if you mean the status icons, they are customizable in the Appearance pane.

I mean the look of the tabs themselves, the text entry box (color, location, shape), etc. I'll be honest, I didn't have any specific changes in mind, but from time to time when I change message views I wish that they seemed like they blended in with the window better. I get the feeling I'm kind of alone on this one... just say the word and I'll drop it.

I would like to be able to set the width of the tabs. Chatting with two people where one got "my nickname" as alias and the other got "this is really a long alias i got. i like it that way to annoy others that bla bla bla" doesn't look nice in tabs.
It's not a bug. It's an undocumented feature.

Set their Alias, and add/subtract characters as needed to make the sized tab you want.

So you guys are saying you want us to remove customization from the contact list in order for it to be on par with the message window? ;)

Well put

I really don't see any more need for message window customization. The layout of the inside of the window is by far the most customizable part of Adium, provided you know css/html, and things like the tab ordering, status icons, and toolbar are also completely customizable. Personally, I think a fixed tab width would look pretty ugly with either empty space or cut-off names resulting. If a person's long-a** MSN display name is bothering you that much, then set aliases. I would think display names like that would look fairly displeasing in a contact list, too.

A contact list has a maximum width, though :)

It would be nice if the message window could be made to match the contents, but I don't really see the point, on the whole.

Yeah, the problem with that is webkit. The message window is essentially displaying a webpage, and I'd imagine it would be tough to do that without an actual window.

very yes

(also, it's already done, it's called shapeshifter. We could probably make the tabs a little more customizable, but I don't think it's worth it, and would just clutter prefs for most people)

Does this mean that it will never be possible to see the full nicknames in the Contact List?
Each time a MSN user changes his nickname, it's also needed to update its alias?
