Adium will honor the settings on your System Preferences, so the answer is yes.

It is indeed.
It's the 24 hour clock.

Is that military?
I always thought it to be the clock everyone apart from Americans use.

Wow. I am an idiot. It seems I only changed the viewing options for the menu bar clock without actually changing how the system keeps track of time.

And yeah, in the US, only the military uses twenty-four hour time.

I'd say that the American military must be the only sensible people in your country. But, well...
Take that how you will

Exactly. It's a shame there aren't more of us. I know a person who is convinced that it is silly to use twenty-four hour time because she can "look outside to see if it's night or not." That's pure genius.

But what if you are in a room without a window or door?

Then I think you have more pressing issues to worry about than whether it's day or night. Hehe.
